Hi! I’m Bek
I’m Bek, short for Rebekah Maurice. I am an artist, an illustrator and designer. I have been working for over 5 years as a professional illustrator and graphic designer. I have worked in-house and in-agency for large Canadian companies such as Taxi Agency, Enchant Christmas, Purdys Chocolatier and Tealeaves.
I also run Bek Design my stationery business as well as Blog of Bek my YouTube channel.
I started my business Bek Design while I was going through a difficult time with my mental health. I started drawing the phrases that were helping me through it. Phrases like “There is Beauty in the Struggle” which was something my best-friend said to me at the time.
I started posting and selling that work hoping that the words that helped me would help others. That was always the intention of my business and it evolved with me. As I started to do better my work changed to be more colourful and optimistic while still focusing on mental health and trying to uplift others.
IDEA Grad Show Tote I designed, 2020
My work is deeply rooted in my own journey and I am often inspired by meaningful conversations with friends and fellow artists. I studied design and illustration in the IDEA program at Capilano University and got to meet so many amazing artists, my work grew from their influence.
While in school I kept slowly building my online shop and began doing markets. I’ve since participated in Circle Craft, Make It, Got Craft, Fall for Local, Eastside Flea and more.
In January 2023 I exhibited my work as an artist in my first solo gallery show Upside Down Ocean and I am currently working on a new solo show In Defence of Clutter opening September 12, 2024.
While running my business on the side I also gained experience working for large Canadian companies. I began with an internship at Tealeaves, working on social media and packaging.
I did a practicum at Danica Studio and learned more about surface design, illustration and packaging.
My first full time graphic designer role was at Enchant Christmas. I was there at an exciting time as it was quickly building and I had the opportunity to help shape the brand as well as designing products and packaging to sell. I recently won an RGD In-house Design Award for this work.
I then gained agency experience at Taxi. While there I worked for clients such as BC Dairy, Pacific Salmon Foundation, Foundry BC, Vancity, Diva Cup and more. Notably I created a large branding and illustration system as well as an advertising campaign for Foundry BC which ran on bus ads and social media.
I returned to packaging design at Purdys Chocolatier creating successful packaging lines as well as store signage. I also art directed and designed the Easter 2024 catalogue.
As a freelancer I have worked for large companies like Enchant Christmas, Blenz, Taxi, as well as doing branding for small organizations such as non profits, vintage shops, softball teams and even a small film!
