Blenz Breast Cancer Campaign

Each year Blenz Coffee partners with the Canadian Cancer Society to run a campaign through the month of October. For the month all coffee is served in pink cups that provide information and a QR code for people to donate. On October 23 all coffees purchased are by donation and go directly to the foundation. This year they asked me to create the designs for those three cups.

Initial Concepts

I pitched two concepts, one focusing on symbols which I gave several style options for and one using those symbols narratively. I felt that the narrative illustration was the right way to go and they instantly agreed.

Narrative Illustration

Each cup ties together, the supported woman on one cup becomes the supporting woman on the next.

Final Design

Each cup has a word associated with it already and that gave me a great launching off point. The word for the small cup is “Inspire”. I called this design “Passing the Torch”. As one woman is strengthened and inspired she ignites that spark in another. The mountains signify reaching the mountain top and supporting one another on the way. Each cup also ties to a natural element of strength and power this one being fire.

The word for the medium sized cup is Hope. I called this illustration “Guiding Light in the Storm”. Like a lighthouse in a storm the supporting woman is being the hope that guides the other woman safely home. I also pictured a swallow, these birds fly close to their homes on the shore so when sailors were returning home the first sight of swallows gave them hope that their journey was near its end.

The final cup features the word “Life”. It focuses on the element of earth. We breathe life into each other as one woman helps grow and lift the other woman up above the mountain tops. The flower represented is a bell flower which is a symbol for strength and endurance. The ginkgo leaf is also a symbol of resilience.
